Far away from the crowded scene of touristy Mukteshwar, tucked away amidst
Kumaon’s natural surroundings is an earthy locally built mud house structure
with a spacious room downstairs and an attic room on top. This two-room
property is a homestay in the truest sense making it quite an exclusive stay in
itself. Hosted by the local couple who own the place, the stay offers some
delicious and lip smacking local and home cooked meals. Although driveable,
the last 500 meters approach to the stay is a walk-through fruit orchard with a
number of apricot and apple trees. The fruiting trees surround the property at
one end, while the other side is surrounded by a rich forest dominated by
cheer-pine trees for most parts. Bird calls will accompany you throughout the
day here at Gopi’s mud house but as darkness descends and dusk arrives, the
forested side of the homestay comes to life. There are often sightings of
barking deer and wild boar, and sometimes the odd distress calls of Sambar deer in the deep forests can be heard, signifying the presence of a lurking leopard.
